Sona Jobarteh is an internationally acclaimed Gambian musician, composer, and multi-instrumentalist known for her mastery of the kora, a traditional 21-string West African harp. Born in London and raised within one of West Africa’s historic griot musical families, she became the first professional female kora virtuoso from this centuries-old lineage, breaking a tradition where the instrument was historically passed from father to son. Her music blends traditional West African sounds with contemporary influences while preserving cultural heritage. Beyond performance, she is also an educator and activist, founding initiatives such as the Gambia Academy to promote education and cultural awareness through music.
